The Big Rainforest Adventure

I’ve made over 45 flights into Costa Rica over the past 16 years but had never been to the famous Monteverde Cloud Forest so this past January it was high on my list. The 4 hour bus ride over a rough and winding road that snaked its way up the mountain was exhausting. It was dark, windy, chilly and misty when we got there.

I didn’t know what I was getting into when I signed up for the Skytreck Adventure. I knew we were going to walk over long hanging bridges through thick forest growth but what was this cable thing? It was the most frightening but exhilarating thing I’ve ever done! We were equipped with a harness, helmet and gloves. Then we were hooked unto a cable and sent flying over the tree tops for an eagle’s view of the canopy. We did a total of 11 runs starting short and low, working our way up to the scariest which was several hundred feet high starting from a tall tower swaying in the gusty wind and spanning a distance of over 2,000 feet!

There was so much to see and do in Monteverde: the National Biological Reserve, the Children’s Cloud Forest, Butterfly farms, Frog farms, a new snake exhibit and much more. Three days wasn’t enough. Next time I’ll stay at least a week!
